Welcome to my humble personal site! I am trying to document all my work, resume, and personal projects in one place. I’ve recently started putting some blog posts and unpublished writing under the Blog tab.

The best place to keep up with me is on Bluesky. I try to post a bit of everything, but mostly science-related stuff (and recently, a lot of nonsense). To contact me, you can DM me on Bluesky or LinkedIn, or send me an email at darius.valevicius@gmail.com.

“Liutas” is not my real surname, but it’s a Lithuanian word that sounds nice as a pseudonym.

About me

I’m a Lithuanian-Canadian from Quebec, Canada, currently residing in and studying in Montreal, where I’m a PhD student in neuroscience at the Université de Montréal.

My research focuses on the neural underpinnings of subjective fear, and of emotions more broadly. We want to understand how the brain generates subjective emotional experiences specifically, since this is the main issue when it comes to mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis. My PhD thesis tries to accomplish this through closed-loop neuroimaging, using some fancy AI image models and evolutionary algorithms.

My other academic interests (which bleed readily into my personal interests) also include the history and philosophy of psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and intergenerational trauma.

Besides my studies, I wear many hats and have many passions, including drawing, painting, music, game development, and kickboxing. I’m always down for an artistic collaboration, so if that’s something that interests you, please reach out :)
